MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

IN 2000, THE UNITED NATIONS ESTABLISHED THE MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS – 8 ANTI-POVERTY TARGETS TO ACHIEVE BY 2015.

BEYOND 2015

IN 2015, THE UN WILL CREATE NEW GOALS, WHICH, FOR THE FIRST TIME, COULD INCLUDE JUSTICE AND SECURITY MEASURES TARGETING EVERYDAY VIOLENCE AGAINST THE POOR.

PROTECT THE POOR

IJM JOINS GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT GROUPS, CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS AND WOMEN'S ORGANIZATIONS IN ENCOURAGING THE UN TO PURSUE INITIATIVES THAT ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THOSE IN POVERTY.

12,069

DEAR SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON,

Everyday violence against the poor undermines global efforts to improve health, education, and economic development. Public justice systems that reliably and professionally protect the vulnerable—especially women and children—from violence and exploitation are an essential component of sustainable development.

When the United Nations selects its 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), I respectfully urge you to support goals that:

  • Eliminate all forms of violence against children
  • Ensure that justice institutions are accessible, independent, well-resourced and respect due-process rights
  • Enhance the capacity, professionalism and accountability of the security forces, police and judiciary.

These provisions and more are included in Goals 10 and 11, recommended by the Eminent Persons Panel you appointed in July 2012.

When the UN makes its final decision on the 2015 MDGs, we urge you to ensure these are among them.

Respectfully,

I have a background in nursing and healthcare. The global health implications with eliminating violence is exciting to me. Mr. Haugen's TED talk has led me to learn more about this issue.

I signed this because I believe only with the diminishment of violence - locally, nationally, and internationally - can we sustainably improve the social sphere of the world. Gary's TED talk is by far the powerful one I have seen to date.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to live in fear, but I know it can't be good. We have to do a better job of protecting those who can't protect themselves.

I have been a victim of violence, I know how it imprisons one's soul. I know how a corrupt legal system can silence the victim. We all deserve to be safe.

To permit violence and poverty to continue through apathy or ignorance is inhumane. As members of a global community, we need to effect and sustain change to end the violence, slavery and exploitation .

Because the issue of poverty is not going to be fixed without first changing the culture of violence and slavery. No one deserves to live constantly in fear.

The world has a crisis of conscience. One of the things that helps an individual to reach toward what is good and right is a strong moral fiber and character, barring that, then a strong and ethical enforcement of laws.
